A parent is researching the type of sunscreen for their child to wear to swim lessons. Which of the following resources would be the most reliable for the parent to consult?
- A. A recommendation from the child's swim instructor
- B. An advertisement for sunscreen in a parenting magazine
- C. A published interview with a well-known heart surgeon
- D. A review of sunscreens from a skin cancer research foundation
Correct Answer: D
Rationale: When choosing a sunscreen for a child, it is important to rely on credible sources. A review of sunscreens from a skin cancer research foundation would provide evidence-based information on the effectiveness and safety of various sunscreens. This information is likely to be more reliable than a recommendation from a swim instructor, an advertisement, or an interview with an unrelated medical professional.

October 23, 1956: A student-led peaceful protest of more than 200,000 demonstrators becomes violent after secret police fire on protesters.
October 24, 1956: Soviets appoint Imre Nagy as the Hungarian prime minister. He initiates reform and frees political prisoners.

November 4, 1956: Soviet forces attack Budapest. They quickly overwhelm the Hungarian freedom fighters. An estimated 250,000 Hungarians flee to other countries as refugees.
What conclusion can be drawn from the timeline of the Hungarian Revolution?
- A. Hungary was occupied by both Germans and the Soviets.
- B. The students' protest initiated the revolution.
- C. The revolution started in 1945.
- D. November 4 was the commencement of the Iron Curtain battle.
Correct Answer: A
Rationale: The correct answer is A because the timeline clearly shows that Hungary was under the control of Nazi Germany until January 18, 1945, when it fell to the Soviets. This indicates that Hungary was occupied by both Germans and Soviets. While the student-led protest on October 23, 1956, marked a significant event in the revolution, it did not initiate the occupation by the Germans and Soviets. The revolution did not begin in 1945; instead, it started with the student-led protest in 1956. November 4, 1956, marked the Soviet forces' attack on Budapest, not the battle for the Iron Curtain, which refers to the ideological divide between Eastern and Western Europe during the Cold War period.

Dear Aunt Suzanne,
I have a few minutes before I get on the bus to Galway back to Dublin and wanted to tell you how my trip to Ireland is going. We just spent two days in Inis Mor, the largest of the Aran Islands, which are just off the central west coast of Ireland. We tool a ferry from Galway, a ride that takes about an hour and was quite gray and stormy.
For an Island that is only about 12 square miles, there is a lot to do and see on Inis Mor! After eating stew and vegetable soup and brown bread with butter, we went to the seater market, where all kinds of woolen products are sold. The Aran Islands are known for their wool because sheep thrive here and generations have used woolen sweaters and hats to survive long cold days of fishing on the open sea. In fact, I learnt that each family or clan has its own signature knitting pattern and some are able to tell which family someone belongs to by the pattern of their sweater! The Healy pattern is an interesting combination of twists and braids, and I found you a birthday souvenir with a beautiful example.
The next day, we rented bicycles and toured the island. We saw ancient ruins, a prehistoric hill fort, and a white sand beach. We also climbed down to a mysterious rock formation known as “The Worm Hole,†a rectangular hole in a stone shore that fills with thrashing waves and looks like it houses a terrible serpent (see attached photo). The Worm Hole was difficult to find, and when we stopped someone for directions, she only spoke Gaelic. Sometimes this island seems stuck in an earlier time.
I’m excited to see you when I get home. I have lots more pictures to share!
Love, Eva
Which of the following additional sources would have a comparable theme to the passage?
- A. A journal entry about Dublin's food and weather
- B. An essay about Irish agriculture
- C. A postcard sent from the Aran Islands
- D. An instructional book on knitting
Correct Answer: C
Rationale: The correct answer is C: 'A postcard sent from the Aran Islands.' The passage describes Eva's experiences on Inis Mor, one of the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland. Eva recounts her visit, mentioning activities like exploring the island, learning about woolen products, and encountering unique landmarks. A postcard from the Aran Islands would likely cover similar themes, providing insights into the scenery, culture, and attractions of the islands. In contrast, the other options - a journal entry about Dublin's food and weather, an essay about Irish agriculture, and an instructional book on knitting - do not directly align with the experiences and themes described in Eva's trip to the Aran Islands.
THE Farallon Island, or devils Teeth, as they are referred to by sailors, area group of small islands with rocky, barren terrain and treacherous, 48 km (30 miles) off the coast of San Francisco, California although the islands are small, with a combined total land area of 0.41km squared (0.16 square miles), they are positioned in a major ocean current, which enables them to house dense populations of birds, rodents seals, and other water mammals.
The abundance of wildlife first attracted Russian and American fur traders in the early 1800s, who then nearly eliminated the seal population in the area. The islands then became an agricultural resource for San Francisco during the gold rush era when egg companies began harvesting bird eggs on the islands. In 1863, violence between viral egg companies erupted on the islands (known as the Egg War") which inadvertently attracted national attention and provoked lawmakers to pass legislation to protect and rehabilitate the island's natural ecosystem.
In 1881, an executive order was passed that decreed egging illegal on the Farallon's. This ended private enterprises on the islands was reinforced in 1909 when President Theodore Roosevelt created the Farallon Reservation to restore human access and preserve that northern island, and over time many of the island original inhabitants have returned.
The Farallon's are now home to the world's largest population of western gull. Seals have returned, as well as otters and sea lions, which in turn attracts great white sharks. The combination of sharks, underwater currents, and jagged coastline are probably what earned the Farallon's their nickname "Devil's Teeth," though it hasn't stopped a few adventurous people from swimming. Four people have completed the 30-mile swim from the islands to San Francisco; the fastest person completed the journey in 14 hours.
Which one of the following supports the detail that the Farallon Islands are a natural home to many animals?
- A. Ocean currents
- B. Human presence
- C. Lush landscape
- D. Abundant land
Correct Answer: A
Rationale: The correct answer is A: 'Ocean currents.' The passage mentions that the islands are positioned in a major ocean current, enabling them to house dense populations of birds, rodents, seals, and other water mammals. This indicates that the ocean currents play a significant role in supporting the diverse wildlife on the Farallon Islands. Choices B, C, and D are incorrect as human presence, lush landscape, and abundant land are not highlighted as factors contributing to the natural habitat of animals on the islands.
An employee at a local coffee house is asked by a manager to clean the restrooms before clocking out and deliver used coffee grounds to the community garden for compost after lunch. Which of the following steps should the employee perform third?
- A. Eat lunch
- B. Deliver used coffee grounds
- C. Clock out
- D. Clean the restrooms
Correct Answer: C
Rationale: The correct sequence of steps for the employee to follow is as follows: 1. Clean the restrooms, 2. Eat lunch, 3. Clock out, and 4. Deliver used coffee grounds to the community garden. Clocking out should be the third step as it signifies the completion of work before engaging in any additional tasks or responsibilities.
